Executive Summary

The Core Thesis

The people who succeed in tech, founders, fast movers, strong engineers, got there by doing real team projects, gaining visibility, and putting themselves in difficult collaborative situations. Most young developers don't know that path exists, let alone how to get on it. Covelopers builds that path deliberately, and makes it accessible to anyone willing to do the work.

The Problem

The Solution: Covelopers

Covelopers is a registered Community Interest Company (CIC) — built in the community interest, not purely for profit.

Key Differentiators

1) Authentic origin — built by developers who faced the exact same problem and proved the concept works
2) Real environment, not simulation — industry tooling, real clients, real deadlines, real accountability at every stage
3) Access platform — Covelopers doesn't just teach; it connects developers to the people, projects, and rooms that change careers

Market Opportunity

The UK Tech Talent Gap

The UK tech industry faces a growing structural talent crisis. Demand for developers outpaces supply at every level, yet entry-level candidates with degrees and bootcamp certificates routinely struggle to land their first role for 12–18 months post-graduation. The gap is not in technical ability. It is in demonstrable, team-based experience. Covelopers exists to close that gap from both sides.

Who We Serve

The Junior Developer
18–28, studying or self-taught
Has the skills but can't prove them. University group projects don't count. Personal projects don't replicate team dynamics. Needs real experience, such as PRs, standups and shipped products, to break through the ATS and land interviews.
The SMB / NGO
Businesses needing dev support
Can't afford agency rates (£10k+). Needs a website rebuild, internal tool, or custom system delivered at commercial standards. Covelopers delivers skilled, well-managed teams at accessible rates, with full professionalism.
The Partner / Sponsor
Hiring pipelines, brand alignment
Companies wanting to build a junior hiring pipeline, offer internship placements, or associate their brand with a mission-driven developer community. Sponsors gain visibility and access to vetted, experienced developers.

The Philosophy

"In a lot of industries you don't need a degree — you need the mental discipline and work ethic. You can learn anything on the fly in most jobs. You cannot simply change your work ethic. We are giving young developers the mental discipline and work ethic." — Ibrahim Farrah, Co-Founder & CEO

Origin

Covelopers was founded in July 2025 after a co-founder proposed a simple idea: build projects under a company name. Companies carry more weight than personal projects. People joined, some landed their first roles, and it kept growing. The problem was never technical ability. It was the absence of demonstrable, team-based experience. Nobody hands you that. So we built an environment that does.

"If the door is locked, try the window." — Lynn Caine

Two-Track Structure

Covelopers Academy (Public)

The entry point for junior developers. Members work in real sprint teams using the same tooling and processes as professional engineering environments, not simulations.

  • Real sprints, pull requests, and code reviews
  • Linear and Jira for project management
  • Standups, documentation, retrospectives
  • Shipped projects with real external stakeholders
  • LinkedIn endorsement + written reference on completion
  • Top performers graduate to the internal commercial track
Covelopers Internal (Commercial)

The commercial and operational engine of Covelopers. Skilled engineers deliver client work, build internal systems, and run the infrastructure that keeps the organisation growing.

  • Client projects: CentoUno website rebuild, Capgemini-connected project
  • Internal platforms: Communication, CRM, Client Portal, Project Portal, Recruit
  • Revenue generation, partner delivery, commercial output
  • Three workstreams: Growth, Efficiency, and Visibility

Member Journey

Stage What Happens Outcome

Completion Project ships; receives LinkedIn endorsement and written reference CV-ready proof of team-based experience
Selection Top performers invited to internal commercial track Ongoing client work, deeper network, more visibility
Alumni Members who land roles remain connected to the community Network compounds; Covelopers brand grows through placements

Covelopers Business Plan — Confidential Platforms & Technology

Platforms & Technology

Covelopers is building its own operational infrastructure, purpose-built for how a developer collective actually works. Five platforms form an integrated ecosystem, all feeding into a central CRM. Services are presented externally as coming from Covelopers as an entity, not from individual teams or the Academy.

Platform Domain Status Purpose
Covelopers Communication meetings.covelopers.com LIVE Internal meeting coordination + external call scheduling with availability heatmap and Google Meet auto-generation
Covelopers Client Portal portal.covelopers.com SCOPED Private dashboard for paying clients — live project progress pulled from Linear, project request submission
Covelopers Project Portal projects.covelopers.com SCOPED Public portfolio — all Covelopers projects, member submissions, Linear-synced status
Covelopers CRM admin.covelopers.com SCOPED Central operations hub — member pipeline (applicant to alumni) + client pipeline (enquiry to delivered)
Covelopers Recruit recruit.covelopers.com SCOPED (MVP: Tally) Intake for external organisations bringing opportunities to Covelopers members — internships, collaborations, junior roles

Technology Stack

Layer Technology Rationale
Frontend Next.js 16 + TypeScript SSR, performance, reusable component architecture across all platforms
Database Neon (PostgreSQL) + Drizzle ORM Serverless, scalable, fully type-safe queries
Auth NextAuth v5 — Google OAuth Frictionless login, role-based access (admin / team lead / developer)
Email Resend → noreply@covelopers.com Transactional email across all platforms from a single verified domain
Hosting Netlify + Porkbun domains Fast deployment, custom domain management, SSL
Project Tracking Linear Source of truth for all project state — feeds Client Portal and Project Portal automatically

Commercial Pipeline

Key Structural Challenge — Retention

Developers tend to leave when their project ends. Only admins are permanent. The community infrastructure, including the Project Portal, regular events, general channels and recurring calls, is what keeps members engaged between sprints. Building this stickiness is the primary operational priority for the next six months.

Critical Gap — Website & Visibility

covelopers.com currently does not communicate the mission, the differentiation, or the seriousness of what Covelopers is building. Someone landing on it cannot tell if it is a side project or a real organisation. Fixing the website copy is a priority before any major outreach or advisor meeting. Social media metrics and project timescales need to be available and visible.

Covelopers Business Plan — Confidential Financial Model

Financial Model

Current State

Covelopers is a pre-revenue organisation operating on a volunteer basis. All members and admins contribute their time without pay. The first commercial client project (CentoUno) marks the transition to revenue-generating operations. The financial model is built around multiple revenue streams activating in sequence as the organisation matures, starting with client fees, then sponsorship, then placement and events.

Revenue Streams

Revenue Stream Description Timeline Priority
Client Project Fees Commercial web and system delivery — competitive vs agencies, accessible for SMBs 0–6 months High
Sponsorships Tech companies and platforms — brand access to mission-aligned developer community 3–9 months High
Internship Placement Fees Organisations pay to access vetted Covelopers members via Recruit platform 6–12 months Medium
Events & Hackathons Sponsored events, partner-hosted hackathons, ticketed community events 6–12 months Medium
Premium Academy Tier Optional structured curriculum, 1:1 mentoring for Academy members 12+ months Future

Covelopers Business Plan — Confidential Risks & Roadmap

Risks & Roadmap

Risk Register

Risk Impact Probability Mitigation
Developer retention between projects High High Community infrastructure, Project Portal, regular events; make the community sticky, not just the work
Website not reflecting quality internally High Current Website copy overhaul is a priority item before the next major outreach or advisor push
Commercial pipeline dependency on Cloud Crew Med Med Direct client acquisition via Book a Call, social media presence, advisor and sponsor networks
Co-founder disagreement on direction Med Med Clear governance: founding team holds final authority on brand, structure, and strategic direction; decisions escalate to all three co-founders
Delivery quality on first client projects High Med Internal developers (not Academy members) handle all commercial delivery; code review enforced
Slow membership growth Med Low Social media push, direct outreach via Somalis in Tech, Deen Developers, Coderco, Deengineers; sisters-only track; Birmingham expansion
Parallel competitor community emerging Med Med Covelopers' advantage is structure, real client work, and professional standards. Community-only groups cannot replicate this. Focus on quality and outcomes over volume. Differentiate publicly via website and social presence.
